CHARLOTTE HAS ME FOR BREAKFAST (ON RADIO!)

'Remember the first time you went to a show and saw your favorite band. You wore their shirt, sang every word. You didn't know anything about scene politics, haircuts, or what was cool. All you knew was that this music made you feel different from anyone you shared a locker with. Someone finally understood you. This is what music is about.’- Gerard Way, My Chemical Romance

I love that quote by Gerard. Music touches your soul. Which songs represent you? When your clock stops ticking and your soul has left the building, which songs do you want played when they’re cascading tears over your casket? Have your funeral songs changed over the years? Do you believe in living in the now for a richer life?

Ok, now you’re wondering if I’m a bit morbid (I have my moments). But hear me out.

Firstly, I wanna make a call to action: CONNECT WITH ME WHAT YOUR FAVOURITE SONG IS, AND WHY, AND LISTEN OUT IF CHARLOTTE RYAN & I PLAY IT ON KIWI FM ON MONDAY MORNINGS (read on to find out more).

Music bonds us. When my son, Izaac and I went to the ARCTIC MONKEYS concert, not only did we get to jig around with thousands all reveling in music too, we also created a fabulous memory linking experience. Because EVERY single time either of us hears an ARCTIC MONKEYS song, guess where we’re transported to, no matter where we are?

Alex Turner

Izaac Betts

I’ve intertwined the memory linking and power of now strategy with my funeral songs too.

For example, one of the songs I want at my funeral is The Rolling Stones, ‘YOU CAN’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT’.

Izaac says when he hears any of my funeral songs, it makes him feel grateful I’m still here. If that’s not a brilliant strategy to teach him to appreciate me while I’m alive, then EKHARDT TOLLE’S ‘The Power of Now’ is a load of rubbish. And we know it isn’t. The reason MINDFULNESS is all the rage is  BECAUSE THE POWER OF BEING IN THE NOW WORKS. Also, did you see in an article in the NZ Herald recently about RICHIE MCCAW's record 133rd test, RICHIE said we need to be more in and enjoy the now, where you’ve been and what you’ve achieved to fully appreciate your life?

“Nothing has happened in the past; it happened in the Now. Nothing will ever happen in the future; it will happen in the Now.” ― Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment

Anyway, not talking about life after we’re done won’t avoid the inevtiable. So if you’re brave enough, try it out at home with loved ones. Only start worrying if they go for something like LMFAO’s ‘I’m Sexy And I know It...’

I was invited by KIWIFM’s ‘sexiest voice on radio’’s CHARLOTTE RYAN to talk about my blog because it covers life in general. Things like 5 THINGS: THE SILLIEST INTERVIEW MISTAKES TEENS MAKE BEFORE THEY’VE EVEN OPENED THEIR MOUTH’, ‘ASK THE AGENT’, ‘NO TATTOOS BEFORE YOU’RE 30’, my ‘get-your-act-together-you-need-to-get-a-job’ TEEN CAREER PREP programmes, and more. Charlotte asked me to choose two songs:

Pre-order Celeste on iTunes from http://smarturl.it/iCeleste

Foster The People's song "A Beginner's Guide To Destroying The Moon" from their BBC Radio 1 live session with Zane Lowe. Pre-Order Foster The People's new album 'Supermodel' now: http://fosterthepeople.com iTunes: smarturl.it/Supermodel Amazon: smarturl.it/SupermodelAmazon

I’ll be joining CHARLOTTE RYAN every Monday morning at 7.30ish on KIWIFM 102.2 AUCKLAND, 102.1 WELLINGTON & 102.5 CANTERBURY. Which is where the call to action comes in: CONNECT WITH ME WHAT YOUR FAVOURITE SONG IS, AND WHY, AND LISTEN OUT TO SEE IF CHARLOTTE RYAN & I PLAY IT ON KIWI FM. And if there’s a topic you want us to cover, lemme know.

In the meantime, have a listen to my radio segment with the amazing CHARLOTTE RYAN on our hot topics this week, including:

  • Why do I feel a need to dress up my dog, #MONTYMODELDOG (who posed with LORDE) like a ‘BARBIE DOG’?
  • Which ‘STARS IN HIS EYES’ was MONTY this week (Hint: someone who was bullied)?
  • Which school did you go to and what course did you attend to learn to package and sell yourself?
  • Are you really on show the moment you step out the door?

Thanks for joining me! If you find stuff here that could be useful to someone else, share it.

In the meantime,
